TAMARA ABDUL HADI

Picture an Arab Man

Picture an Arab Man is the debut photobook by Tamara Abdul Hadi. With select images from the portrait series of the same name, this monograph presents the viewer with an alternative visual representation of the contemporary Arab man by Abdul Hadi and a reflection on how the Arab man might be seen — reframed and reimagined.

The book features a foreword by Randa Jarrar and comes with a written contribution by one of three men photographed within the book, Yassin Alsalman, Omar Offendum, and Hamed Sinno.

She is an Iraqi photographer whose work is concerned with the historic and contemporary representation of her own culture, in its diversity. Along with being a photographer, Tamara is an educator who has taught in Palestine, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, the UAE, Kuwait, Tunisia, and Canada. Her work has been published in the mainstream media extensively, though she now prefers to work for more independent entities. Her photography and commentary focus on the dispossessed and marginalized, the underside of Orientalist representations, the underground of settler societies, and the changing social and environmental landscapes of the Middle East. Her photographs have been exhibited worldwide.

Designed by Roï Saade and published by We Are The Medium in Montreal (2022).
